The ocean covers 70 percent of Earth's surface. It contains about 1.35 billion cubic kilometers (324 million cubic miles) of water, which is about 97 percent of all the water on Earth. The ocean makes all life on Earth possible, and makes the planet appear blue when viewed from space. Earth is the only planet in our solar system that is definitely known to contain liquid water. Yet only 5% of the ocean, which connects all life on Earth, has been explored. Even in the 21st century, we know less about inner space than we know about outer space. This is the ultimate theme of the Blue Marble Series:

What kind of peaceful planet do you think we might be able to achieve if we look inward, at the source of life itself, and understand our one and only home in the galaxy better? Would we learn how to live more harmoniously with the millions of species of plants and animals, as well as our next door neighbors?

The answers lie within us all. Take the first step to finding out and go beyond Beneath the Surface by taking a deeper dive into ocean and media literacy, as well as Chinese language & culture with the Activity Pack learning extension materials.
